Makurdi, Benue State – In a candid disclosure during an interdenominational church service commemorating Nigeria’s 63rd independence anniversary, Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State revealed that his administration inherited a staggering debt of N359 billion from the previous state government.
Governor Alia, a Catholic priest, made this revelation at the Methodist Cathedral, South Bank, Makurdi, during the service organized by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Benue State Chapter. Despite this daunting financial burden, he expressed unwavering determination to revitalize the state’s economy and create an enabling environment for businesses to prosper.
“What we inherited was nothing to be proud of, but we will do what will make us all proud. I inherited over N359 billion in debt,” Governor Alia lamented.
He also voiced his concern over the significant losses incurred due to herders’ attacks on farmers, including valuable agricultural produce and property. To support local farmers, Governor Alia pledged his administration’s commitment to providing seedlings, fertilizers, and other forms of assistance for the upcoming farming season.
Acknowledging the state’s abundant resources, Governor Alia emphasized his vision to harness these assets, particularly in agriculture, and create prosperity for the people. He specifically called for an immediate halt to illegal mining activities in various parts of the state, emphasizing that “This is an order.”
Governor Alia addressed the issue of rising crime rates in the state, including kidnappings, promising robust efforts to combat these challenges. He underscored the importance of youth empowerment and digital education, with plans to train 10,000 youths in information technology.
In closing, Governor Alia made a resolute commitment to transparency, vowing not to tolerate corruption or nepotism in his administration. He appealed to Benue’s citizens to support the state in any way possible, emphasizing the critical role of the youth in shaping the state’s future.
