Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has encouraged Nigerians not to lose hope after 63 years of nationhood but to believe that a brighter Nigeria is still attainable.
Obi, the former governor of Anambra, conveyed this message in his goodwill address during the 63rd Independence anniversary celebration in Lagos on Sunday.
President Bola Tinubu, in his Independence Day speech, acknowledged the hardships faced by Nigerians, emphasising his commitment to building a future Nigeria where the nation’s benefits are equitably shared, not monopolised by a privileged few.
He envisioned a Nigeria where hunger, poverty, and suffering are relegated to history.
Obi however expressed concern over the significant uncertainties and hardships that many Nigerians endure due to prolonged leadership challenges spanning 63 years of nationhood.
He stressed that while the situation might appear dire, it is not beyond hope.
The presidential candidate drew an analogy between a nation’s progress and modern technology, highlighting that the quality of input determines the output. He emphasized that every nation shapes its destiny and leadership based on its choices.
“Nigeria is no exception. If we tolerate ineffective leadership, we must accept the consequences. At 63 years, what questions are Nigerians posing to their leaders, and what answers do we expect?
” In spite current challenges, I remain optimistic that a new Nigeria is attainable, but the responsibility lies with Nigerians.”
Obi urged Nigerians to reflect on their nation’s journey since 1960 and question whether they have realized their full potential despite abundant human and natural resources. He concluded by extending his best wishes for a joyful independence anniversary, praying for continued divine grace and mercy upon the nation.
