In a devastating incident that unfolded on October 1, 2023, a petrol tanker explosion in Delta State has left five people dead. The tragedy occurred at Ugbenu in Ethiope West Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.
According to the Delta State Police Command, the ill-fated tanker, loaded with highly flammable petrol, was en route to Benin City when disaster struck in the early hours of that fateful day. The incident sent shockwaves through the community.
DSP Bright Edafe, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, provided details of the incident during a press briefing in Warri on Sunday. He revealed that the tanker toppled at Ugbenu Koko Junction, resulting in a spill of its deadly cargo into a nearby swamp.
Tragedy took an even more horrifying turn as local youths rushed to the scene to collect fuel using jerry cans and containers. An unexpected explosion ensued, engulfing the entire area in flames and claiming the lives of five individuals who were part of the group attempting to collect fuel.
In addition to the tragic loss of lives, the inferno consumed a number of properties. Among the casualties were eight buses of various makes, two tankers, five trailers, two motorcycles, a Sienna space wagon, and a ‘C’ Class Mercedes Benz car.
The remains of the victims have been transported to the Oghara General Hospital’s morgue in Ethiope West.
The Delta State Police, in conjunction with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) stationed in Ethiope West, swiftly responded to the scene to manage the situation and ensure the smooth flow of traffic.
Mr. Wale Abass, the Commissioner of Police for Delta State, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. He also issued a stern warning against greed and urged Nigerians to refrain from engaging in the dangerous practice of collecting fuel during oil spillages, emphasizing the serious risks it poses to both individuals and the community at large.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with mishandling petroleum products and the critical need for safety awareness and vigilance in such situations.
