Sports Minister congratulates Super Eagles after Sao Tome defeat

The Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Owan-Enoh, has lauded the Super Eagles for their outstanding triumph against São Tomé and Príncipe in Uyo on Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) highlighted that the Super Eagles delivered a stunning 6-0 victory, concluding the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 qualifying rounds on a high note.

Reflecting on the game, Owan-Enoh praised the squad for reciprocating the unwavering support from Nigerians with an exceptional display on the pitch. He further emphasized his aspirations for the team to clinch the AFCON title next year.

“On behalf of the nation, I extend heartfelt congratulations to the Super Eagles for their splendid performance. As we celebrate this qualifying success, I urge the team to stay focused and aim for the ultimate prize at the tournament in Ivory Coast next year. The nation yearns for the AFCON trophy, and we are committed to providing the necessary support,” he remarked.

The Minister reassured that his department would invest its utmost efforts to ensure the team’s preparedness in their pursuit of the coveted title. He acknowledged the dedication the players exhibited, wearing the national jersey.

“It’s vital that this rejuvenated spirit of nationalism persists, propelling the team to showcase even greater prowess at the AFCON,” Owan-Enoh added.

Striker Victor Osimhen netted three times during the match, taking his tally to 20 and placing him as Nigeria’s fourth-highest goal scorer. Ademola Lookman, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Samuel Chukwueze also added to the scoreline.

With an impressive 15 points from six matches, the Super Eagles comfortably clinched the top position in Group A.

NAN further noted that fans eagerly await the AFCON, set to be hosted by Ivory Coast in January 2024.
